To expand publicly available electric vehicle charging, the Washington State Department of Commerce has selected the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE) to design and provide technical assistance and outreach for a new statewide charging incentive program.
The Washington State Electric Vehicle Charging Program will offer $60 million in incentives to install Level 2 and DC fast chargers throughout the state. The program will incentivize installations at multifamily housing, schools, government facilities, fleet depots, tribal communities, workplaces and other public charging locations. It prioritizes equity in access to EV charging, with a goal to direct 40% of program funding for installations in overburdened and vulnerable communities.
The program will be open for applications from September 6-December 1, 2023. During that period, CSE and partner organizations will provide technical assistance and outreach to educate prospective applicants about EV supply equipment technology, help them complete application documents, and connect applicants with utilities and potential partners. In addition, CSE will facilitate two webinars with the Department of Commerce in September and October to provide information on how to apply.
The Department of Commerce will inform applicants of awards by January 16, 2024, and awardees will be eligible for additional technical assistance from January 16 to June 30, 2024.
CSE is assisting with program design, including incentive structure and eligibility requirements, and will provide a program website, applicant technical assistance, consumer support, and outreach.
The Washington State Electric Vehicle Charging Program is part of the state’s commitment to innovation in the transportation sector, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.
Washington is the ninth state to select CSE for a clean transportation incentive program, joining California, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Vermont. CSE designs and administers state and utility electric vehicle and EV charging programs valued at more than $3 billion.
