Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
With guidance from senior T&I staff, the Junior Data Visualization Specialist works both independently and collaboratively on projects. Their responsibilities include the following:
- Data Visualization and Reporting:
- Understand and implement best practices for T&I’s interactive and static data visualization deliverables, which can range from web-based interactive dashboards and static charts to maps, predictive models, and other reporting tools such as static tables and infographics.
- Support Data Visualization Specialists during the design and development phase of data visualization deliverables, including contributing to user story interviews, and applying UX/UI principles to wireframe designs and design tasks.
- Access data and facilitate reporting from existing databases.
- Use and maintain standards of practice documentation, complete projects, and ensure consistent quality across our visual analytics deliverables.
- Contribute to training modules and learning opportunities for staff to learn visual analytics skills.
- Research and Statistical Methods
- Perform statistical analysis (descriptive statistics) and/or GIS-based spatial analysis.
- Perform quality control (QC) on data analysis conducted by research analysts.
- Assemble, manipulate, analyze, and interpret data from various sources, potentially in coordination with external research partners.
- Compile, read, and summarize existing literature to frame research efforts and inform policy.
- CSE Program Support
- Support the development of visual analytics tools for program assessment, tracking, and evaluation, including projections of program budgets and participation rates.
- Support program staff or senior members of T&I team in developing presentations.
- Present materials to clients for feedback, including wireframes and visual minimal viable products.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Required
- Data Visualization Software/Libraries (Beginner/Intermediate proficiency)
- Familiarity with applying basic data visualization approaches
- Implement dashboard wireframes and understand container organization
- Understand interactive features, including parameters, filtering, and actions
- Familiarity with data visualization software, including but not limited to Tableau Cloud, Tableau Public, Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep, PowerBI, Flourish, Datawrapper, Plotly Dash, Matplotlib, Sanborn or other comparable software preferred
- Familiarity with data connectors
- Graphic Design Software (Beginner/Intermediate proficiency)
- Knowledge of scalable vector graphics (SVG)
- Understand basic graphic design principles
- Figma, Canva, Flourish, Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator experience preferred
- UX/UI (Beginner proficiency)
- Aware of user stories and user testing processes
- Understand how to effectively ensure smooth transition from test environment to production environment; Ability to test the production environment.
- Data Management (Beginner/Intermediate proficiency)
- General knowledge of ETL processing
- SQL experience preferred, not required

- Understanding of electricity sector (including rates) and/or markets or policy related to electric vehicles, energy efficiency, distributed generation and/or energy storage
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (Beginner/Intermediate proficiency)
- Knowledge of vector-based analysis, spatial joins, static map production, and use of Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS)
- Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS product suite, QGIS, geopandas, or comparable software preferred
- Apply cartographic principles
- Survey and statistical analysis tools (Beginner proficiency)
- Survey platforms (e.g., Alchemer, Qualtrics)

Education:
- Bachelor's degree with substantial coursework in web design, data visualization, data analysis, and statistics. Majors in visual arts, graphic design, computer science, social science, environmental science, economics, or related fields preferred.
- Coursework should show substantial data visualization, web design, and analytical content.
- Additional work experience may be substituted to satisfy the education requirement.
